Design: A
beautiful vignette, featuring delicate decoration combined with
strong typography.
The gold leaves in the upper foreground are
very artistically echoed by smaller dark leaves in the
background.
In Greek mythology, Arion was a celebrated
poet and musician; the illustration is unusual in that it
depicts male rather than female musicians.
Yet another example of the contemporary
fascination in Europe with the ancient world, spurred by the
new science of archaeology.
The strong upper segment is well balanced
by the attractive cartouche at the foot.
