Mill-Opera-Rekord (Germany) / c. 1910

back next

Design: A soft-contoured lettering style for the label name, in a style which gained popularity in the advertising world in both North America and Europe in the Edwardian era (1900-1910). The typical left-leaning stress of the 'O' can be seen in fonts such as Windsor (1905) and Cooper Black (1920), which remain popular today. The logo, a dynamic graphic of a bell swinging in a belfry, is almost three-dimensional in effect; how it relates to the words 'Mill-Opera' is unclear.

History: Label scan courtesy of German collector Georg Richter, who notes that he has other Mill-Opera-Records in his collection which do not carry the 'Jacob, senior' imprint.
