Orion Plade

Orion-Plade (Norway) / c. 1911

back next

Design: In Greek mythology Orion was a giant hunter whom Zeus placed among the stars; 'Plade' can be translated as 'platter' or 'disc.' In keeping with most pre-WWI labels, the label name follows the outer curve, in this case using a sans-serif or 'grotesque' font (one of the many typographic innovations of the Victorian era). The focal point of the design is the delightful illustration of the table-top wind-up phonograph with the rear-mounted 'morning glory' horn.

History: Unknown. Label scan courtesy of collector Kjell Thorsen of Norway, who notes that this label was active between 1909 and 1916; the serial number of A14 likely places it early in the catalogue.
