Corporate background:
Manufactured by the British Vocalion
company, this 6 inch record was evidently aimed at the
lower-priced segment of the record market.
Label scan courtesy of UK music researcher
and collector Bill Dean-Myatt.
|
Design: The
border shows a ‘stroboscopic’ pattern designed to
appear to be standing still when the record is being played at
the correct speed (specified here as 80 rpm), a technological
gimmick which would gain popularity in the ‘30s and
‘40s.
Though the layout and treatment is
different, the label has the same ‘feel’ as The Little Marvel label, the lettering obviously coming from the
same designer’s hand; but while the latter label features
soft, organic curls in the upper segment, this one shows a
jagged lightning strike.
The same print shop was used for the
imprinting, as can be detected by the same mix of bold
condensed gothic and roman typefaces.
