Corporate background:
The Duophone Syndicate began around 1925 as
record player manufacturers, their machine featuring a dual
soundbox (hence the name).
The company went out of business in 1930
(info: Brian Rust, The American
Record Label Book).
|
Design: This
label, introduced in 1928, was the third and final design used
by Duophone in the record-manufacturing side of its business.
The square inside the circle, the outer
edges filled with organic ornament, was a concept used by Vocalion; two squares in the circle, one square being
rotated to 45 degrees, was a design used by Aco, a Vocalion subsidiary.
The spiky leaves match the Gothic lettering
of the label name, and the classic black-and-gold colour
combination make this a very attractive label.
The ‘U’ at the top presumably
represents the word ‘Unbreakable,’ an advertising
claim used by the company.
