Opika 1

Opika (French West Africa) / c. 1949

back next

Design: A lion rears his head and roars at shadowy human figures in the distance. Perhaps he has been disturbed from his noonday siesta, since he is lying down and is not in an aggressive attitude. The humans seem to be involved in a dance, with the man seated (drumming?) while the woman dances.

History: 'Opika,' meaning 'populated place,' is a town in Uganda, central Africa. As noted on the label, the record was manufactured in France, probably for its French-speaking colonies in west Africa. Label scan courtesy of musicologist and collector Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K.
