Caribou (Jamaica) / c. 1953

back next

Design: The rough, hand-drawn label name lettering fills the upper segment, the bottom edge made to look like a rising stage curtain. Below, a cross-legged performer, wearing a robe, sings while playing some kind of stringed instrument.

History: 'Carib,' for Caribbean, is no doubt the basis for the label name, but 'Caribou' calls to mind the North American reindeer. Label scan courtesy of UK music researcher and collector Bill Dean-Myatt.
