Jax (U.S.A.) / 1952

Design: The label name is lettered in a jaunty, playful manner, with saxophone keys on each main downstroke, and featuring unusual split-ended hybrid Tuscan/block serifs.

History: Perhaps a combination of 'jazz' and 'sax,' Jax was founded in New York City in 1951 by music producer Morty Shad, who with his brother Bob had earlier started the Sittin' In With label (the graphics of which are very similar). The Jax label, active until 1959, featured many well-known blues and R&B artists. Label scan courtesy of collector Georg Richter of Germany.
